How to Load DRM-Free eBooks Onto Your Kindle

How to Load DRM-Free eBooks Onto Your Kindle

The Kindle is a fantastic reading device, but it’s almost entirely reliant upon Amazon’s closed retail system for buying books. That’s by design, of course—it’s an Amazon gadget, they want you to spend money on their store. But if you have a collection of eBooks obtained somewhere else, designed for cross-platform reading in another format without the typical DRM, it’s possible to get them loaded onto your Kindle fairly easily.

Kindle-Compatible File Formats

Before we start, make sure your books are in the right format. the Kindle supports Amazon’s Kindle Package Format, as well as .mobi, .azw3, plain text .txt and rich text .rtf, Adobe PDF, and Word’s standard .doc and .docx files. If your DRM-free ebook doesn’t fit into one of those categories, you can use a tool like Calibre to convert it into something more compatible (more on that in a bit).

Load Books Directly Over USB

How to Load DRM-Free eBooks Onto Your Kindle

The Kindle is mostly designed for Wi-Fi management of its files, but you can also load them directly onto it like any USB drive. Plug your Kindle into your PC with a compatible USB cable (most use microUSB), then copy and paste your DRM-free files into the “Documents” folder on the device. If they’re in the correct format, they’ll appear in on your Kindle’s library when you unplug it.

Transfer Books Over the Air with Amazon’s “Send to Kindle” Desktop App

Amazon allows users to send compatible ebook and document files from Windows and macOS desktops to their Kindle devices over Wi-Fi or the “Whispernet” 3G setting in some premium Kindle models. Head to this page and download the application, then install it on your desktop.

Once the program runs, you’ll be prompted to sign in with your Amazon account—use whichever one is connected to your Kindle.

There are three different ways to send files to your Kindle once the installation is setup: you can open the program manually, then drag and drop one or more files into the interface. You’ll then be able to send the files to specific Kindle devices (eReaders, mobile phones with the Kindle App installed, et cetera). The books will download to your selected devices the next time they’re synced to the network.

How to Load DRM-Free eBooks Onto Your Kindle

You can achieve the same thing by right-clicking the files and selecting “Send to Kindle…”

…or by choosing “Send to Kindle” from the Print command of compatible apps.

Selecting the “Archive documents in your Kindle Library” will save a copy to Amazon’s servers, allowing you to download the book or file from any Kindle device or app.

Send Books Using Your Email Client

Every Kindle device and app has a custom email address assigned to it by Amazon. It isn’t designed for conventional email management, but you can send compatible files to that email address, and Amazon will automatically download the files to the relevant Kindle.

To find the email address you’re looking for, head to the Manage Your Content and Devices page of your Amazon account. Click the “Devices” tab, find the device you want to use, and then click the “…” button to the left of the entry.

The email address for this specific device or app is shown. You can click the “edit” button to change the @kindle.com address to something more memorable.

Now switch over to your preferred email client. I’m using Gmail on the web, but any standard email system on any device should work, so long as it allows you to attach files. Create a new email, pop in the address, and attach your documents or files.

You don’t even have to put in a subject or text, just send the email and Amazon’s servers will deliver the files to your Kindle the next time it syncs.

Organize, Convert, and Transfer Books Using Calibre

We’ve covered Calibre before: it’s an excellent third-party suite for creating and managing ebooks. If all you want is to get books onto a Kindle (which Calibre can do automatically with file conversion and transfer), follow these simple steps.

From the main interface, click “Add books,” then navigate to the folder and file you want to send and select it. Plug in your Kindle to your PC, then right-click the book file in Calibre and click “send to device,” then “Send to main memory.” The file will be moved to your Kindle, and if necessary, converted to a compatible file format at the same time.

The converstion, in particular, is what makes  Calibre so useful, even if you don’t use it as an organization too. A lot of DRM-free books come in EPUB format, which Kindles don’t support. Calibre allows you to convert them to the similar, but Kindle-friendly AZW3 format, allowing you to get nearly any book on your Kindle.

How to Turn Off Amazon’s Personalized Ads Around the Web

How to Turn Off Amazon’s Personalized Ads Around the Web

Amazon tracks your browsing history, which it then uses to advertise products to you across the web. Whether you’re tired of seeing ads for stuff you just bought, or you just don’t want Amazon creeping on you, there’s a way to turn of personalized ads. Here’s how.

Amazon uses what it calls Interest-Based ads to sell you stuff. So if go you shopping on Amazon.com, you may see ads for similar stuff later. Some of these ads will show up on Amazon, while others may appear on other, unrelated sites. This is one of the ways you can end up seeings ads on a random blog for an item you just bought.

If you’d rather Amazon not track your shopping habits, you can turn this personalization off. To do this, head to Amazon.com and click Accounts & Lists towards the top of the site.

How to Turn Off Amazon’s Personalized Ads Around the Web

Under “Email alerts, messages, and ads,” click “Advertising preferences.”

How to Turn Off Amazon’s Personalized Ads Around the Web

In the Submit Your Preference box, choose “Do Not Personalize Ads from Amazon for this internet browser,” and click Submit.

How to Turn Off Amazon’s Personalized Ads Around the Web

Note, this won’t stop you from seeing Amazon ads, but it will prevent them from being personalized. This setting is also cookie-based, so if you clear your browser’s cookies or use another browser, you’ll need to change this setting again.

How to Listen to (and Delete) Every Command You’ve Ever Given to Alexa

How to Listen to (and Delete) Every Command You’ve Ever Given to Alexa

Believe it or not, the Amazon Echo has something similar to what your web browser history is on your computer: Alexa records and logs every single command you’ve ever given. Here’s how to access it and see (and hear) everything you’ve ever said to her.

You might assume that the main screen of the Alexa app shows you past commands that you’ve shouted out. While this is partially true, the main screen is really only there to show you additional info for specific commands.

For example, if you ask Alexa about the weather, you’ll see a weather card appear in the Alexa app, giving you more details about the forecast. If you set a timer, you’ll see that timer appear in the Alexa app, where you can view the time remaining. However, saying something like “Alexa, turn the lights on” won’t appear on the main screen.

With that said, here’s how to see and hear every single command that you’ve ever told Alexa on any of your Alexa devices.

Start by opening up the Alexa app and tapping on the menu button up in the top-left corner of the screen.

Select “Settings” at the bottom.

How to Listen to (and Delete) Every Command You’ve Ever Given to Alexa

Scroll all the way down to the bottom and tap on “History”.

On this screen, you’ll see a list of commands that you’ve given to Alexa, including all those times she misheard you.

apping on a command will bring up more options, like the ability to listen to the recording of the command (by tapping on the play button), sending feedback to Amazon about the command (by tapping “Yes” or “No” as far whether or not Alexa correctly understood you), and deleting the command from the history entirely.

How to Listen to (and Delete) Every Command You’ve Ever Given to Alexa

Keep in mind that this section of the Alexa app is the only place where you can delete a specific command completely—deleting just the card on the main screen won’t actually delete the command from the history, as it will still show up here.

If you want to delete the entire history of your Alexa commands, you can do so on a per-device basis by first visiting Amazon’s website in your web browser of choice. From there, click on “Accounts & Lists”.

Under the section “Digital Content and Devices”, click on “Content and Devices”.

Directly to the left of an Echo device in the list, click on the ellipses button.

Click on “Manage Voice Recordings”.

How to Listen to (and Delete) Every Command You’ve Ever Given to Alexa

Click on “Delete”.

How to Listen to (and Delete) Every Command You’ve Ever Given to Alexa

Amazon warns that deleting your Alexa command history may degrade the voice recognition experience, since it uses those recordings to improve itself. So keep that in mind if you plan to go this route.

Find PDF Manuals for your Electronics on Amazon

If you are looking to download the user’s manual of an electronic product that you own but it is nowhere to be found on the manufacturer’s website, you might as well try a search on Amazon.com.

The site hosts PDF manuals of thousands of electronic products including those of items that have either been discontinued or are no longer available for sale on Amazon.com.

DOWNLOAD USER MANUALS IN PDF FROM AMAZON

The user manuals are primarily hosted on two Amazon servers – images-amazon.com and ssl-images-amazon.com – and here’s how you can find the one you are looking for.

Go to Google and type the following query. Replace the word PRODUCT with actual name of your product.

PRODUCT filetype:pdf site:ssl-images-amazon.com OR site:images-amazon.com
The above mentioned Amazon sites also host sample chapters of books in PDF format so you may want to add some extra terms to the search query – like Operation Guide, User Guide, Owner’s Manual, Installation Guide, etc. – for better results.

The older manuals are mostly PDF images scanned from the printed document (example) but since Google supports OCR, these scanned PDFs are also searchable.

One more thing – if the PDF is bulky, you can just put the file URL in Google Docs Viewer and read the full manual online instead of downloading that file to your computer.

How to Make Your Wired Printer Wireless

Your laptop and desktop computers are connected over a Wi-Fi network but you still need a physical USB cable to connect your wired printer to one of these computers.

If you find your existing setup a bit inconvenient and are looking for ways that will help you print documents from the same printer but wirelessly, here are some choices.

TURN ANY WIRED PRINTER INTO A WIRELESS NETWORK PRINTER

More new printers these days are network enabled so you can just attach them to your home network using the Ethernet port (or over Wi-Fi) and print from any other computer in the home network. However, if you are using an old USB based printer, you can use a wireless print server to turn that wired printer into a wireless one.

Wireless print servers are small devices (they look like mini routers) that have a USB port. You just have to connect the printer to this wireless print server using a regular USB cable and the printer will then become available to all other computers in your wireless network.

Here’s an overview of some of the most popular wireless print servers:

Netgear WGPS606 – This is both a wireless print server and a wired router.   It has two USB ports so you may use the device for sharing up to two printers over the wireless network. The same print server can also help you connect four different computers to the network even if they are not fitted with wireless network adapters. Costs around $60.

Linksys Print Server – This wireless print server from Cisco makes it easy to access all the functions of your all-in-one printer over the wireless network.   The Print Server can connect most USB based multifunction printers to your network using an Ethernet cable or Wireless-G. The print function works like any other print server but for scanning or copying, a user can request exclusive use of that function until his task is complete. Costs around $80.

HP Wireless Kit – If you like to turn your wired HP printer into a wireless one, the HP Wireless Printing Kit could be a good choice as it integrates fully with all features of your printer, including print, scan, and fax. It comes with a USB transmitter that you need to insert into the computer for wireless printing. The advantage is that you can print wirelessly even if you don’t have a wireless network. Requires Windows and costs around $75.

If you don’t have a wireless network at your place, you can consider getting a Bluetooth adapter for your printer. You need to attach the Bluetooth dongle to your computer and print wirelessly though the range will obviously be limited. Check your printer manufacturer’s site if they provide a Bluetooth adapter for your printer model.

SHOULD YOU BUY A WIRELESS PRINT SERVER?

Before you invest in a wireless print server for your printer, consider this.

Today, most multifunction printers include wireless capabilities and can therefore connect directly to your wireless network without any additional hardware. Some of these printers are available in the $100 range. With this in mind, does it make more sense to purchase a new printer instead of buying a wireless print server for your existing printer?

Here are some possible scenarios:

* If your current printer is relatively new and you paid more than $100 for it, then it may be more economical for you to simply purchase a wireless print server instead of purchasing an entirely new printer with the same features.

* If a wireless printer in not available in your area, you can buy a regular USB based wired printer and get someone to ship you a wireless print server. This would incur less shipping costs than ordering a wireless printer.

* Some wireless print servers can be used as wireless routers. If you do not have a wireless router at your place, you can opt for a wireless print server as it will not only turn your printer wireless but you also get to setup a wireless home network.

A Price Tracker Made for Online Shopping in India

The prices of products at various shopping websites fluctuate frequently and wouldn’t it be useful if there were a mechanism that will alert you when the prices of specific products change. Well, Google Sheets can help here.

USING THE PRICE TRACKER – STEP BY STEP

You can now use this Google Sheets based Price Tracker to monitor and compare prices of products on Flipkart, Snapdeal, Infibeam and Amazon India.

The Price Tracker will take no more than a minute to setup.

1. Click here to copy the Price Tracker Google Sheet in your Google Drive.

2. Put the links (URLs) of one or more products from Snapdeal, Flipkart, Amazon.in or Infibeam in column A. You’ll have to put the links of individual product pages and not categories or search pages. You can add or remove items from this list later on as well while the Price Tracker is active.

3. Go to the Cell A11 and put your own email address. This is the address where the price alerts will arrive.

4. Open the India Price Tracker menu in the Google sheet (see screenshot) and choose Authorize. Next go to the same menu and choose Start Tracker to begin tracking.

That’s it. You’ll get daily email alerts when the prices of any of these products change. Internally, this tool is screen scraping prices from Flipkart and Snapdeal while in the case of Amazon, it gets the prices through the Amazon API.

The tracker runs once every 24 hours but you can always change the frequency manually. Go to the Tools menu in the sheet and choose Script Editor. Go to Resources -> Current Triggers and change the frequency of the trackPrices trigger from daily to hourly.

Create Price Alerts on Junglee

Amazon owned Junglee.com is probably the biggest price comparison website in India. Unlike other comparison engines that mostly focus on “popular” online sellers, Junglee lists prices from smaller stores as well that aren’t well-known brands but may sometimes offer better deals.

What some may not know is that Junglee offers price alerts, a useful feature that is not even available on its parent Amazon website. You can add one or more items to your watch list on Junglee and the site will send you an email alert whenever the price of a monitored product drops by 300 or more.

To set your price alert, open any product page on Junglee – like this listing of  iPhone 6 – and click the button that says “Price too high”. Next click the “Set alert” button and the product will be added to your watch list. You can manage all your price alerts from this page
