How to Perform a Backup on Windows XP

Considering the increased amounts of data that you save to your computer each day, more and more users embark on a quest for the most effective and reliable backup solution.
However, very few know that Windows XP has its own backup utility.

1. To use the built in Windows XP backup tool, follow the instructions.

How to Perform a Backup on Windows XP 1

2. Click the Start button > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup.

How to Perform a Backup on Windows XP 2

3. The Windows XP backup tool allows backing up all user files in just one task.
If you select the option of the My Documents backup, it will copy the entire contents of the Documents and Settings folder including MS Outlook/Outlook Express messages and settings as well as your profile settings.

How to Perform a Backup on Windows XP 3

4. However, in most situations full backup is not necessary.  In all likelihood the My Documents folder of your computer will be large in size and contain a lot of irrelevant information. If this is the case, Windows XP backup tool suggests that you manually specify files that you want to include or exclude from the backup set.

How to Perform a Backup on Windows XP 4

5. Lastly, don't forget to backup your Internet Explorer favourites from within IE. You can export them from the Menu.

6. And, for really important backups, nothing beats writing down names, phone numbers, email addresses and bank account details.

  • In additions Window XP backup tool allows backing up the System state data that include Registry, Boot files, COM + Class Registration database. However, you cannot include or exclude specific components.
  • Windows XP backup tool offers five types of backup: normal, copy, daily, differential, and incremental. To be honest, this abundance of backup types causes nothing, but confusion especially if this is your first time backup.
  • The farthest location Windows XP backup tool suggests is a network drive or an external drive. By default, it will even offer you to back up to a floppy drive, and that's the only removable storage it has in store for you. Now think how many floppy diskettes it will require to back up 30GB of critical information!
  • There can be different backup types among which you can choose depending on your needs. The most common being full, incremental and differential.
  • When you do a backup, it is extremely important where you keep the resulting files. It is recommended to keep such files as far as possible from the local computer.

  • Back ups should be stored on an external drive, not an internal hard drive. If the internal drive fails (and all drives eventually fail) you will lose your original files AND your backups.

How to Stop a Windows Computer from Freezing

Windows is probably the most popular operating system on the market. Although popular, it is not perfect. In fact, it could even be called infamous; it is known to run slowly, freeze, and crash on users frequently. On good systems this is rare, but when your computer suffers from a lack of maintenance, problems are to be expected. Unfortunately most users don't perform routine maintenance on their systems. You don't need to be a computer expert to be able to perform simple maintenance, all it takes is a little of your time.

How to Stop a Windows Computer from Freezing 1

1. Run a virus scan.  Viruses are usually the culprits behind random errors, freezing, and crashing. How to run a virus scan depends on what anti-virus software you have, but basically you select drive C: and/or other disks (especially hard disks) that you suspect to have a virus, and click a button to activate the scan.

How to Stop a Windows Computer from Freezing 2

2. Uninstall programs you no longer need.  Unnecessary programs may not seem like much, but some of them do run idly in the background, and this takes up memory. To uninstall a program, enter the control panel and click "Add/Remove Programs," select the program you want to uninstall, and click "Change/Remove". You can also insert the installation CD and select uninstall, or look for a file something like "uninstall.exe" in the program files.

How to Stop a Windows Computer from Freezing 3

3. Close some applications.  Do you always minimize programs rather than close them? Don't worry about that picture you have open, it won't go away after you close it. That web browser, just bookmark the page or save the process (saving if you have FireFox). Save what you want to save, and close the windows quickly before you decide you want them open (you should know that to close a program you click the little "x" in the upper right corner of the window, there is a more efficient way of doing this without using the mouse... press ALT+F4 to close the window, ALT+TAB to navigate through open windows).

How to Stop a Windows Computer from Freezing 4

4. Delete any files you no longer need.
This helps if you do it before defragmenting your disk, since there are fewer files for the defragmenter to move. Select the file(s) you want to delete, and press the "delete" key, or right click and click "delete".

How to Stop a Windows Computer from Freezing 5

5. Use the scheduled maintenance tool.  Under the "accessories" folder in the start menu there is a folder called system tools. Depending on your version of Windows, there is a program with a name along the lines of "Maintenance Schedule Wizard." This program will help schedule disk cleanups, disk defragmentations, and more. They all help with keeping your computer's performance at the optimum. Note that in Windows XP it is called "Task Scheduler".

How to Stop a Windows Computer from Freezing 6

6. Clean up your registry.  Find a registry cleaner or clean it manually. Don't clean it manually if you aren't comfortable changing important system settings. Also try using disk cleanup from the start menu under system tools. This folder can be found in accessories.

How to Stop a Windows Computer from Freezing 7

7. Defragment your hard disk.
Click START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS>DISK DEFRAGMENTER. Follow the onscreen instructions and choose the C: drive. If you're wondering what this does, think if it this way: When you use your computer, files must be opened on your computer, then closed. When files are moved or deleted, they jump around on the part of the disk physically. Eventually the files are scattered everywhere, and it takes your computer longer to find them. By defragmenting your hard drive, you put all of the files close together again, and it's easier for the computer to find them. Defragmenting your drive may take anywhere from ten minutes to several hours depending on the size of the disk and the number of files.

How to Stop a Windows Computer from Freezing 8

8. Open up your computer case and dust it out.
Dust can make even the best computers run slowly. Unscrew the screws on the side of the case, remove large pieces of hardware and tie down cables, and start vacuuming out dust. Be careful not to suck in any jumpers, pins, wires, etc. You may find it necessary to start removing hardware to access other hardware. Be sure to dust out the heat sync and other fans. If you don't feel comfortable doing so, contact a tech-savvy friend or simply use an air-can. Don't worry too much, it's large amounts of dust that will cause real problems.
  • While you're in the computer, check the heat sync to see if it is faulty. This can cause any operating system to freeze, especially the higher NT versions of Windows.
  • Although the above suggests a vacuum cleaner to dust out a computer, there is a risk of static discharge. It isn't recommended that you do this if you are uncomfortable. Instead, try using an air duster. For removable fans, take them out and CAREFULLY clean them.
How to Stop a Windows Computer from Freezing 9

9. Format your disk and reinstall your operating system. Be sure to back up your data, for everything on your hard disk will be deleted.

How to Stop a Windows Computer from Freezing 10

10. Downgrade to a lower operating system (e.g.: From Windows XP to Windows 2000).
Your computer's specs may be too low to run the operating system at a satisfying level. The minimum requirements are MINIMUM, meaning that if you just meet them, you will just be able to run the operating system. For optimal performance, be sure to have at least the suggested specifications, not the minimum.

How to Stop a Windows Computer from Freezing 11

11. Consider running a small Linux distro.
Use a search engine to find a distribution of Linux that you think you would feel comfortable. Linux is another operating system, and is open source, meaning it's legally free. If you want an interface similar to the Windows interface, go with a KDE version. Try looking on Linux informative sites such as distrowatch for the most recent versions of Linux and reviews on the downloads.

How to Stop a Windows Computer from Freezing 12

12. Buy or build another computer.
Maybe not the solution you were looking for, but this is probably the best alternative if your computer fails to function properly after so much work. Remember that computers aren't designed to last a long time, most last about 2 to 5 years before hardware issues start showing up (this is not related to the Windows installation, which will usually last you about six months to a year on low maintenance).

  • When you want to get rid of a program, don't just delete the shortcut, uninstall it from the control panel. Deleting a shortcut is just that, deleting the quick file that executes the main executable on your desktop rather than directly. Uninstall programs rather than delete shortcuts.
  • Empty your recycle bin at least once a week. Even though the files are in the recycle bin, they take up space and sometimes still run.
  • Consider downloading or buying better maintenance tools. The tools included with Windows are just a start at what you want to do, and they might not be as good as other maintenance tools. If you have the hard disk space, download and install better maintenance tools, and be sure to use them.
  • It may sound silly, but consider using a lower screen resolution. See if it lowers the CPU usage.
  • Run the Desktop Cleanup Wizard. In the higher NT versions of Windows, there is a tool that allows you to clear unused shortcuts from your desktop. Right click on your desktop and go to properties, and find the Desktop Cleanup Wizard.

  • Beware of computer viruses online when you make any downloads. Scan zip folders before you extract them, scan executables, scan anything suspicious. Don't go overboard, though.
  • Be careful handling any computer hardware. If you don't feel comfortable handling computer hardware, ask a tech-savvy friend to help you.

How to Fix the Blue Screen of Death on Windows

Three Methods:  Diagnosing the Problem  Analyzing the Crash Report  Fixing the Problem
A Blue Screen Error or STOP error, also known as the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), can be a frustrating experience. The error message almost never clearly states what is wrong, and they seem to strike at random. Follow this guide to diagnose and fix the errors causing the Blue Screen of Death.

> Method 1 of 3: Diagnosing the Problem

[fvplayer src=' the Blue Screen of Death on Windows Step 1 Version 3.360p.mp4' autoplay=true loop=true]

1. Determine if you changed anything recently.  The most common cause of the Blue Screen is a recent change in your computer’s settings or hardware. This is often related to new drivers getting installed or updated. Drivers are software that allow your hardware to communicate with Windows.
  • Because there are essentially an infinite number of hardware configurations possible, drivers can’t be tested for every possible setup. This means that sometimes a driver will be installed that causes a critical error when communicating with the hardware.

2. Check your computer’s internal hardware.  Sometimes, a poor connection inside the computer can cause a Blue Screen. Open your case and check to make sure that all the cables are firmly connected and that any cards are seated firmly in their sockets.
  • This is more difficult for laptops. You can check the hard drive and the RAM to make sure that they are connected properly. Remove the panels in the back that cover the hard drive and RAM with a small Phillips-head screwdriver. Press the components firmly into their connections.

3. Check your computer’s temperature.  Overheating can lead to your hardware malfunctioning. One of the most common components to overheat is the graphics card. The second most likely culprit is the CPU.
  • You can check temperatures in most BIOS menus, or through software in Windows.

4. Test your Ram.  A common culprit in system crashes is a bad stick of RAM. When RAM fails, it causes the system to become unstable. You can test your RAM by using a program called “memtest86”. This program is available for free online, and is run by burning it to a bootable CD.
  • Reboot your computer and run the program. The memtest software will automatically begin running tests on your computer’s RAM. This may take several minutes to complete. For best results, allow several passes of the test to be completed. Memtest will run indefinitely until you stop it yourself.
[fvplayer src=' the Blue Screen of Death on Windows Step 5 Version 3.360p.mp4' autoplay=true loop=true]

5. Test your hard drive.  Run the “chkdsk” function  on your hard drive to scan for errors and fix potential problems. A failing hard drive can cause Blue Screens due to corrupted files. To run chkdsk, open Computer/My Computer and right-click the disk that you want to scan. Select Properties.
  • From the Properties screen, select the Tools tab.
  • Click Check Now in the Error Checking section. Your computer will prompt you to restart in order to scan the disk.
6. Strip your computer down to the essentials.  One way to narrow down what is causing the problem is to remove everything that is not essential for the PC to run. This way, if the error goes away, you know that it was one of the pieces that you disconnected.
  • A desktop computer needs the motherboard, CPU, a hard disk, power supply, RAM, and a keyboard. Plug your monitor into your motherboard’s monitor port (if it has one) so that you can disconnect the graphics card. Everything else can be removed during the diagnostic process.
  • If the computer runs fine after stripping it down, add one part back at a time until the error message appears again. This will let you know which device is causing the computer to crash.
  • This method does not apply to laptops, as you cannot strip it down.

> Method 2 of 3: Analyzing the Crash Report

[fvplayer src=' the Blue Screen of Death on Windows Step 7 Version 3.360p.mp4' autoplay=true loop=true]
1. Set your computer to stop on a Blue Screen of Death. Oftentimes the computer will reboot before you have a chance to examine the contents of the Blue Screen. You will need to set your computer to stop on Blue Screens so that you can copy the necessary information.
  • Open your System Properties. In any version of Windows, press Windows+Pause/Break on your keyboard to open the System Properties window.
  • Click Advanced System Settings. Windows XP users will already be in the Advanced System Settings.
  • Click the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery section of the Advanced tab.
  • Uncheck the “Automatically restart’ option under the “System failure’ section. Click Apply to save the changes. The next time the computer experiences a Blue Screen of Death, the computer will display it until you manually reboot the system.

3. Wait for your system to crash again.  When the Blue Screen appears again, jot down the following information from the display.Input the data into a search engine to see what hardware or program the error might be originating from:
  • ”The problem seems to be caused by the following file:” Make note of the file displayed as well as the error message printed below it
  • ”STOP:” Copy the first code after the STOP message.

> Method 3 of 3: Fixing the Problem

[fvplayer src=' the Blue Screen of Death on Windows Step 9 Version 3.360p.mp4' autoplay=true loop=true]

1. Boot into Safe Mode.  If Windows won’t start because of Blue Screen errors, try booting into Safe Mode so that you can try fixing the problem. As the computer is booting, repeatedly hit the F8 key until the Windows boot menu appears. Select Safe Mode with Networking to boot into a stripped down version of Windows.
This will allow you to access your Device Manager, the internet, and other system tools.

2. Run a virus scan. Sometimes viruses and malware are at the root of a Blue Screen problem. Make sure that you have the latest antivirus software installed, and perform a full system scan to find anything that could be causing problems.
how to fix blue sceen window of death 2
3. Perform a Repair Installation of Windows.  This is a quick alternative to completely reinstalling Windows, as it only copies system files to your computer. This is useful if an essential file has become corrupt and is causing your computer to fail.
  • To perform a repair installation, insert your Windows disc and boot from it. In the setup menu, select Repair Installation. Windows will delete old Windows files and copy new ones. You will not lose any personal data.
how to fix blue sceen window of death 3

4. Roll back your drivers.  If the cause of the problem is hardware, the first thing you should try is rolling back drivers. This process will install an older version of the driver software, potentially getting rid of the conflict.
  • Open the Device Manager. You can access this by opening the Start Menu and right-clicking on Computer/My Computer. Select Properties, then Device Manager. In Windows 8, press Windows+X and select Device Manager from the list.
  • Select the hardware that you want to roll back. You may have to expand categories to find it. Right-click on the icon and select Properties.
  • Click the Driver tab. Select Roll Back Driver and confirm that you want to roll it back.
  • Continue using your computer as normal. Once your driver has been rolled back, continue to use your computer to verify that the error does not occur again. Do 'not' update the driver again until a newer version is released.
how to fix blue sceen window of death 4

5. Roll back Windows updates. If rolling back the driver did not fix the problem, consider restoring to an older, working installation of Windows. This will let you determine if the Windows updates are responsible for your Blue Screen.
  • Open System Restore. You can find System Restore by searching for it in the search bar in the Start menu. Open the program, and select a date from the calendar before you started experiencing errors.
  • This will reset all of the updates and settings to that date, effectively removing any updates added afterwards. Use this to determine if a specific Windows update is what caused your malfunction.
how to fix blue sceen window of death 5

6. Clear up hard disk space.
If Windows does not have enough space on the disk it is installed on, it can cause system failures. Remove unnecessary files and programs if you have less than 15% of your hard disk free.

how to fix blue sceen window of death 6

7. Apply new updates and drivers. If rolling back drivers and updates didn’t work, installing the newest versions and updates (if they weren’t installed already) may fix your problem. Check your Windows Update program to see if there are any new system and hardware updates available.
  • Click Start and search for “Windows Update”. In Windows 8, tap the Windows key and then start typing “Windows Update”.
how to fix blue sceen window of death 7

8. Reinstall Window.  If you cannot track down the error, you can try a full reinstallation of Windows as a way to reset your computer. Make sure that you have all of your important files backed up before doing so, as your hard drive will be formatted for the install process.
  • If the Blue Screen is being caused by a failing piece of hardware, reinstalling Windows will not fix the problem. You will need to find and replace the piece of hardware that is causing problems.

9. Replace faulty hardware.  If driver and update rollbacks do not solve your problem, you may need to remove and replace your hardware. Replacing anything other than the RAM or hard drive on a laptop can be difficult and expensive.
  • If the RAM test shows that you have faulty memory, you will want to replace the failing stick as soon as possible.
  • If the hard disk scanner is returning disk errors, you should back up your data and install a new drive. This will require reinstalling Windows if the drive has your Windows installation on it.
  • If your graphics card is failing, replacing it could get expensive. This is almost impossible to fix in most laptops. For a desktop, open your case and swap out the old card for a new one.

  • When the STOP error appears, first try to start the computer using the essential hardware only. If your computer starts successfully, then try to troubleshoot the hardware driver by reinstalling or updating firmware.

  • Do not edit the registry or the start-up programs without technical assistance or how-to.
  • Backup your data to an external drive in Safe Mode before restoring last known good configuration or running repair diagnostics.

How to Be a Facebook Queen Celebrity

How to Be a Facebook Queen Celebrity 1

1. Upload a photo.
Remember we want our photos to look natural, so keep your background simple. Flash photography makes your face appear oily and brings the worst out in our photos. If you're wearing makeup, do not use foundation with SPF15, this makes our face look ghostly white in the photos. If your looking to take a hot pic, show only a bit of skin, pucker your lips and keep your hair down (hair should be washed and looking silky). If you just want to take a simple pretty pic, consider taking your photos outdoors (in a forest or in your garden) wear clothes that are comfortable, act completely normal by smiling and looking at the camera or playing with your dog/cat. The most important thing is to smile with your eyes, so you may want to widen your eyes or sqint your eyes a little.
